Despite what the movie starring Cher and Christina Aguilera would have you believe, burlesque isn’t all fan dances and feathers. In Fem Bones’ world, it includes blood, guts and claws.

The Great Pumpkin Feast: The Good and Bad of This Fall’s Pumpkin Spice Snacks
food

It’s October, which means two things: it’s Halloween for a month and it’s also pumpkin spice season. There are many people both for and against flavoring things with “pumpkin spice,” which is a sort of vague and insidious flavor to begin with. What does pumpkin taste like? Have you ever bitten into a pumpkin? Is human consciousness a tragic … never mind. So you won’t have to ponder these deep pumpkin related questions, I went ahead and tried a variety of pumpkin flavored treats. Now you’ll know which to grab before it’s too late, and which to skip. I give you the Great Pumpkin Feast!

Sloppy Snacks: Rating the Best and Worst Late Night Convenience Store Buys
Ridiculous

I’d call my relationship with food average. I have never been the type to shop exclusively at Whole Foods, to frequent food blogs or spend much time thinking about locally sourced kale. I don’t abide by any particular diet. I probably eat more GMO’s than I’d care to think about. More

Watch Dog: 5 Films Similar to New Daniel Radcliffe Horror Fantasy ‘Horns’
Movies

In case you didn’t realize, it’s Halloween!  And, no, it doesn’t just mean sloppy costume parties where regrettable decisions are made.  It’s also a time for horror movies, and why not throw a little comedy into the mix for a gag?  This week sees the release of the supernatural horror comedy “Horns,” directed by Alexandre Aja, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Max Minghella, Heather Graham, Joe Anderson, and Juno Temple. Based on Joe Hill’s novel of the same name, “Horns” tells the story of Ig, a man accused of the rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin.  Ig wakes up one morning to find that he has horns protruding from his head and the power to make people reveal their deepest, darkest secrets and desires.  He uses these newly found supernatural abilities to try and uncover the real killer. Pre-Bar Exam: When in Doubt, Throw Chili Powder at Armed Robbers
BDCWire

It’s difficult to imagine hitting the bars this weekend after getting the news that forever-mayor Tom Menino passed away this week. But the big guy had a sense of humor, and he’d want an old-school Irish funeral, complete with admiration and laughs over his famous flubs. So toast his 20 years in office and then watch this very ’80s video of his City Council campaign and marvel at how much his career evolved and how his choice of eyewear didn’t. Then talk about everything else that’s been going on in town this week. It’s how Tommy M. would want it. More

Imagine you’re sitting on your porch, texting a friend, when a car rolls by and  someone snaps a photo of you in a low-cut shirt. Creepy, right? Well what if the photo taker was a robot created by one of the largest Internet companies in the world? More

CreaturoS Patch Together Older Influences For New Sounds on Latest Album
Local Music

CreaturoS are busy practicing at their space in Somerville when I stop by to take pictures. Their space, a tiny room in bassist Joe Marrett’s basement, was built by the old owner of the house to play drums in without bothering the neighbors. The quartet is working on a new groove that sounds like it could have been a Temptations song. Marrett is climbing a scale up and down his bass while drummer Dom Mariano pounds out a trudging 4/4 beat on the high hat and snare. Guitarists Spenser Gralla and Noah Bond play matching chords with an accentuated high chord on the fourth beat. For a second, you can imagine the guys in matching powder blue suits doing choreographed moves around one microphone at the Apollo. More

Beyond the Remakes, Sequels, and Franchises: The Best Horror Movies of This Millennium
Movies

The past 14 years in horror have been… interesting.  Nobody has produced anything on the same level as true classics from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.  Many, in fact, largely drew on references from the horror movies of those years.  Most horror movies have either been a remake, a sequel, or part of a franchise, like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Halloween” or “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity.” More

Tired of the Halloween house party scene? Sick of finishing just out of the medals in bar costume contests? There’s much more to do this Halloween weekend, so you don’t have to stay home and hand out candy to an endless parade of Elsas whose parents aren’t even much older than you and somehow can afford to own property in your neighborhood, and that is truly frightening.

The Next-Level Costumes of Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Halloween Horror Movie Marathon
Movies

The Coolidge Corner Theatre held its 14th Annual Halloween Horror Movie Marathon on Saturday night and it was more than just 12 hours of motion picture. Satan kicked off the costume contest, Tupac’s spirit paid a visit, and Kevin, the head projectionist, played his 35mm magic at full throttle. The Theatre had plenty to show us, and one night definitely wasn’t enough time. Here’s just some of what we saw:
