Gettin’ Inked: Scenes From the 2014 Boston Tattoo Convention
Boston events
Tattoos aren't for everyone, but those who love tattoos really love tattoos. This was one of many things made obvious during our visit to the 2014 Boston Tattoo Convention this past weekend at the Boston Back Bay Sheraton Hotel. Now in its 13th year, the convention brought out over two hundred body artists and hundreds more tattoo fans. While we didn't get any ink done this time around (maybe next year), we did get to check out plenty of beautiful works and many works in progress as well.

Happy Labor Day/Allston Christmas! Here’s how to celebrate in style this week -- and that means leaving your white pants in the closet because it’s traditional to retire them after Labor Day, and anyways your white pants are covered in various food and beverage stains because you still haven’t learned to properly feed yourself.

Sleeping with the Protagonist: A Night at Boston’s New Verb Hotel
Nostalgia
Whenever I drove through the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, my eye always involuntarily gravitated towards the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge nestled between the ballpark and Boylston street. It appealed to me as a gem from another era, a place where I easily imagined interesting characters flooding in and out of its rooms while baseball, bars, and music venues formed a protective shell around its perimeter. El Duderino: The People of ‘Lebowski Night’ at The Coolidge
BDCWire
"The Big Lebowski." It’s a stoner comedy, a western, a crime drama and above all else: a cult film. The epic tale of Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski and his bowling buddies has been a fan favorite since its release in 1998, and Coolidge Corner Theatre, the Brookline movie house, has screened it annually since 2003. On the tenth anniversary of Lebowski Night at Coolidge, fans lined down and around the corner, eager to get inside and grab a seat. Some wore costumes; some were veterans of the Lebowski scene, and others were seeing the film for the very first time. As seats were claimed and beverages were purchased, the theater was abuzz and spirits were high. But when the house lights went down, all eyes were on the silver screen. More

Cambridge Startup Aims to Revolutionize the Bike with Copenhagen Wheel
Technology
Within the first twenty feet, Andrew Schmidt was sold on it. Prior to his first visit to Superpedestrian’s office in Cambridge, Schmidt knew enough about the Copenhagen Wheel to see the potential. He had been introduced to the electric bike startup by a friend. The Superpedestrian team was looking for someone to do the sort of marketing work Schmidt was currently doing for Puma. But up until that ride, there understandably was some uncertainty. More

Pixies 2013-2014
BDCwire and Arbella Want You to Put on Some Pixies
BDCWire
When it comes to Boston bands, few are greater, and perhaps none as original as The Pixies. Just this past year, the band delivered "Indie Cindy," its first full-length since 1991's "Trompe Le Monde." With this recent Pixies resurgence in mind, BDCwire, RadioBDC, and our friends at Arbella thought it would only be fitting to go back and pay tribute to one of the band's biggest hits, "Here Comes Your Man." The Warmest Welcome: Experiencing Moving Day in Allston 2014
Photos
We've made it. Another September 1 in Allston has passed us, but it didn't come without its bumps, bruises, and the occasional minor disaster. As rats and bed bugs salivated at the sight of another year's beer-stained garbage, and U-Haul after U-Haul wriggled down narrow backstreets, a fresh batch of Allstonites were born. It may not be the most welcoming experience to the neighborhood, but moving day is more or less a baptism by fire, or the initiation that young movers must go through in order see the fruits of the area. This past weekend, a much-needed crew of inspectors bounced from apartment to apartment, and even Mayor Walsh showed face to welcome some fresh faced students into Boston's most student dominated hood. Here are the scenes we captured.

Take My Advice: All in the Family?
help
When I was a baby my parents divorced and my dad moved across the country and started a new family. He totally cut us off--we had no contact with him growing up, or with anyone on his side of the family tree. Fast forward to now. I met an amazing guy, we have the same weird sense of humor, like the same things--basically we're a great match. We've been together a couple months and we're in love...and after a lot of long conversations and some digging around facebook, I'm afraid he might be my first cousin. I don't have proof, and I haven't talked to him about it yet, but the snippets line up--he grew up near where I think my dad's family was living, and I know my dad had a sister with kids. Should I tell him? Should I tell my mom? I'm freaking out that I might be inadvertently on the path to inbred babies. More

ICYMI Eminem Just Released his Most Resonant Single in Years with ‘Guts Over Fear’
Music
“But what am I going to do when the rage is gone/ and the lights go out in this trailer park,” rapper Eminem wonders on “Guts Over Fear,” released earlier this week. Perhaps lost in the shuffle of high profile releases – did you know Taylor Swift has a new song out?—“Guts Over Fear” is a shockingly conflicted single from an artist increasingly comfortable with generating pop hits like “The Monster.”  In fact, while many have dismissed Marshall Mathers for being past his prime (and perhaps rightly so), “Guts Over Fear” demonstrates he’s still capable of genuine pathos at times. Jamaica Plain’s Very Own Alamo: Catching Up with the Video Underground
Movies
The Video Underground, which is celebrating its twelfth year, is both a rarity and a staple. For one thing, it's an independent video rental store in 2014, a time of Netflix binges and illegal streaming. And yet, the store is still hanging on in the heart of Jamaica Plain, not simply because of the sheer novelty, but because of the devotion to the community and the obvious passion for all things film and television. I recently caught up with Kevin Koppes, who took charge of The Video Underground a few months back, to discuss the store's move from Centre Street, the difference between Netflix and a video store, and more. Pre-Bar Exam: Class is in Session
Boston
You might not feel the wind chill yet and the Farmers' Almanac doesn’t cover the sudden shift in the median age of a city, but still, believe us: it’s fall, and the students are coming. Enjoy the heat and your ability to move your arms in your favorite dive bar while you still can this weekend. You bring that old college try (or, you know, the opposite of that), and we’ll school you on all the topical conversation starters like the latest in the Market Basket drama and the thrill of Allston Christmas. That way, when you chat about current events this weekend, you'll seem … educated. More
